  1. What is the recall incentive program?

    The Attorney General of the State of Florida is working with Honda to incentivize Floridians to have the defective Takata airbag inflator in their vehicle repaired.

    As part of these efforts, certain Floridians who own Honda or Acura vehicles with unrepaired defective Takata airbag inflators will receive gift cards in the mail. When Honda confirms those consumers have had the Takata airbag inflator in their vehicle replaced, the gift card will become activated, and consumers can use the card the same as a debit card.

    Millions of defective Takata airbag inflators installed in multiple automakers’ vehicles have long been under recall because they can severely injure or kill occupants when they deploy.

  3. What is the status of the Takata airbag recalls?

    Honda has completed repairs on millions of vehicles and has replaced more than 16 million airbag inflators. But there are still more than 2.6 million Takata inflators in Honda vehicles that have yet to be repaired.

  4. Does it cost anything for an owner to have their Takata airbag inflator replaced?

    No. Authorized Honda and Acura dealerships will make appropriate Takata airbag inflator repairs for free – there is no cost to the customer.

    American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has identified these vehicles through its warranty records and identified the eligible owners from the State of Florida vehicle registration data.

  6. How long will this recall incentive program operate?

    The Attorney General and Honda want consumers to have their vehicle repaired as soon as possible.

    Owners can always have the Takata airbag inflator in their vehicle repaired for free. But, to have their recall incentive gift card activated, consumers will need to have their vehicle repaired by April 23, 2021 for this recall incentive gift card.

  7. Which consumers will receive these recall incentive gift cards?

    All owners of Honda/Acura vehicles that still have the original equipment alpha inflators, which are the highest risk inflators in the oldest Honda/Acura vehicles - will receive a letter from the Attorney General that includes a recall incentive gift card.

    Certain owners of Honda/Acura vehicles with unrepaired Takata inflators will also receive a letter from the Attorney General that includes a recall incentive gift card. This program prioritizes those owners with the highest risk inflators as determined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  8. What will eligible owners receive, and how can they have their gift cards activated?

    Eligible owners will receive a letter that includes a non-activated gift card. The letter will include information about how to learn more information about the Takata airbag recalls.

    To have their gift card activated, the owner must have the Takata airbag recall repair(s) completed for their vehicle by April 23, 2021.

    The gift card will be automatically activated following Honda confirming the applicable Takata airbag recall repair(s) have been completed for the vehicle.

    The owner does not need to take any additional action to activate their card.

    Owners can then use the gift card the same as cash wherever Mastercard is accepted. Once activated, the gift card will retain its value through December 2022.

    Over 52,000 Floridians who own Honda or Acura vehicles with unrepaired Takata airbag inflators will receive a recall incentive gift card through this program.

  11. Why are eligible owners limited to Florida residents?

    The Attorney General for the State of Florida sought heightened protection for Florida residents due to the increased risk of Takata airbag inflator rupture in Florida’s climate of high humidity and heat. The Attorney General and Honda share a common aim of increasing recall remedy rates and have agreed to conduct this program to encourage eligible owners of the highest risk vehicles to have their vehicle repaired. This program is in addition to the Multistate Attorney General resolution Florida (and 47 other states) reached with Honda in August 2020.

  12. What are the values of the gift cards being sent to Florida consumers?

    Eligible owners of vehicles with alpha inflators (the highest risk inflators) will receive a gift card worth $150. Eligible owners of vehicles with other recalled Takata inflators will receive a gift card worth $50.

  13. Why do owners of vehicles with alpha inflators receive a greater amount than other owners?

    These inflators have the highest risk of rupture, and these vehicle owners have previously received numerous communications urging them to obtain their free repair. Honda and the Attorney General want to provide additional incentive to have these dangerous inflators replaced.

    For most vehicles, the repair work can be completed in less than an hour. Honda and Acura dealers are also authorized to provide free loaner vehicles for consumers while the Takata airbag repair work is being done.

  16. What if a consumer does not want to drive their vehicle to the dealership – will Honda tow the vehicle?

    If an owner does not want to drive their vehicle to a dealership for repairs, they can call American Honda at 1-888-234-2138 about their concerns. Honda has completed mobile repairs and has towed vehicles to dealerships for repairs.

  17. What if the customer cannot have the recall work completed for their vehicle (due to personal or other reasons) until after this program ends?

    They should call American Honda at 1-888-234-2138 about their concerns. As mentioned in FAQ 15, for most vehicles, the repair work can be completed in less than an hour.

    No. Takata airbag inflators are under recall because they can severely injure or kill occupants when they deploy. We encourage you to make an appointment with an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to get the Takata airbag inflator in your vehicle replaced as soon as possible.

    If you are eligible for this recall incentive gift card program, and you receive the free Takata airbag inflator repair for your Honda or Acura vehicle before receiving your gift card in the mail, Honda will ensure that the gift card you receive in the mail will be activated.
